H 101 - Lab Exercise: The Denmark Vesey Insurrection (1822)

The Trial of Samuel Guifford , a free Negro and Robert Hadden, a free mulatto; both of them boys.

Verdict:

The Court were satisfied that the expressions charged had been used by the prisoners, but from their youth and other circumstances, they considered them rather as the effect of puerile boasting, than as evidencing a conspiracy on their part. The prisoners were therefore unanimously found not guilty, but ordered to be retained in custody charged with a minor offence. They were afterwards whipped in the Work House and discharged. [IMAGE]
