| The End of the World The city of Men-Nefer (Memphis) ancient Egypt was home to Sekhmet, one of a Triad known as the Ptah family. Under instructions from Re to punish mankind for offenses against him, Sekhmet breathes fire over the earth. So bloody is the destruction, Re repents of his order. The only way to stop the slaughter is to feed Sekhmet on red beer mixed with mandrake root ordererd up from the Elephantine. She falls asleep and awakens in her benign aspect. Sekhmet is associated with healing and Egyptian physicians often included an invocation to her in their ministrations. In her anthropomorphic form, Sekhmet is depicted as a seated woman with a lion's face. She wears a wig and a sundisk. |
