Other 1920s Writers

   Some other 1920s writers include Sherwood Anderson, Willa Cather, Theodore Dreiser, T. S. Eliot, A. A. Milne, John Dos Passos and Emily Post.

Sherwood Anderson-----------------------------------

    "Anderson was the father of my generation of American writers," said William Faulkner (friend of Anderson).   Present day critic Malcom Cowley quotes, "Hemingway, Faulkner, Wolfe, Steinbeck, Caldwell, Saroyan, Henry Miller . . . each owe an unmistakable debt to Anderson."  These were a few things said about Anderson.  He often wrote autobiographical works.  His works included Winesburg, Ohio (1919*), Poor White (1920), Triumph of the Egg (1921), Horses and Men (1923) and Dark Laughter (1925).

Willa Cather-------------------------------------------

    She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923 with One of Ours (1922).  Cather was a novelist.    Willa wrote adventure stories not romances.  She was conservative.  Some of her works include A Lost Lady (1923) and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927).

 

Theodore Dreiser-----------------------------------

    He was a naturalist novelist who based his works on real life stuff.  Dreiser was the editor for a "womens" magazine although he despised the work that was written in it.  His first novel was Sister Carrie (1900) which was partly based on his sister.  One work of his includes An American Tragedy (1925).

 

T. S. Eliot------------------------------------------

   Thomas Stearns Eliot was a poet and playwright.   He became a British citizen 1927.  Eliot one the 1948 Nobel Peace Prize for literature.  Many of his poems reflected his spiritual search.  Some works include The Waste Land, Ash Wednesday, Four Quarterlets, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Hollow Men, Journey of the Magi, Coriolan and Marina.

 

A. A. Milne-------------------------------------------

    He wrote all of his stories as bedtime stories for his son, Christopher Robin Milne.  The characters in the Pooh stories were named after Christopher's stuffed animals.  He wrote Winnie the Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928).  He went on to write many more Pooh books and now the plump little bear is know throughout the world.   His real name was Alan Alexander Milne.

 

John Dos Passos----------------------------------------

    He was a novelist famous for "camera eye".  This is where he would give a panorama of life with impressionistic passages like "Did somebody say McDonalds" of the day.  He wrote Manhattan Transfer in 1925.

 

Emily Post-----------------------------------------------

    She wrote the number one best seller in 1922.   It was a rule book about manners.  To this day people looking for very proper etiquette turn to her books.
