ACCESSORY TURN SIGNALS
One item not provided from the factory on Model A Fords was a
turn signal system. A number of of aftermarket companies manufactured turn
signals either for the rear, or for the front and rear of the car.
The turn signal unit below is owned by Mr. Ralph Davies of Highland, Indiana. Mr.
Davies passed the photograph along through Ron Cloat of Peoria, Illinois.

Little information is available on the turn
signal unit above. The housing appears to be made of stamped metal and fits around
the tail light, providing turn signals for the rear of the car only. Illustrated
hands "point" in the direction of the intended turn. The shape of the unit
is similar to the Model A dash bezel. In addition, a separate stop light
illuminating the word "STOP" is provided.
Mr. Jim Lindberg, a Model A owner from Minnesota and a
collector of Model A accessories, provided the pictures and information on the following
turn signal accessories in his collection.
Below is a deluxe light with all chrome housing that would replace the standard Model A
tail light and also provide turn signals and a stop light.

Below are two pictures of a turn signal light that is added to the standard taillight.
The light has two halves, each halve containing one turn arrow. The
picture on top shows the complete unit with its original box. The picture below the
first shows two views of the unit with the lights on so you can see the arrows.

Below is a complete taillight assembly that replaces the original Model A tail light and
adds turn signals for the rear of the car

All the above turn signals were designed for the rear, but what about turn signals for the
front? Mr. Lindberg has also provided pictures on interesting front units in his
collection.
Below is a set of NOS aftermarket front turn signals made for the Model A Ford. the
lights mount in place of the cowl lights. The column switch shown was with the cowl
lights when Mr. Lindberg purchased them.

The next picture is a close up of the cowl light turn signal assembly. The light unit has a similar lens on the back so the turn signals can be seen in both directions.
|
The following lights contain arrows for turn signals and are mounted much like fog lights
to the front bumper arms.
|
The next light is also a front turn signal unit that is
believed to have mounted to the center of the headlight bar to let oncoming drivers know
of the Model A driver's intentions.
