ENERGY SECTOR IN UZBEKISTAN

Developing the oil and gas industry is regarded as a high priority by the Government of Uzbekistan. In terms of natural gas extraction, Uzbekistan ranks third amongst the Republics of the former Soviet Union and is among the top 10 largest gas-producing countries in the world.

Reserves are found in a number of areas in the country and those with good prospects include Usturt, Bukhara-Khiva, South-West Gissarian, Surkhandarya and Fergana. Indeed, in the whole Central Asian region, Uzbekistan has an estimated 74% of gas condensate, 31% of oil, 40% of natural gas and 55% of coal reserves. More than 2700 deposits of around 100 different minerals have been located, of which 155 are oil and gas condensate reserves and those recently discovered are reported to be able to provide not only the Republic's needs but also to allow the export of energy.

Uzbekistan's gas deposits contain butane, ethane, propane and other components suitable for producing polymeric materials such as polyethylene, and the high content of aromatic hydrocarbons in the Mubarek and Shurtan condensate deposits allows the extraction of toluol, the raw material for obtaining caprolactam. In addition, propane from the Shurtan gas and chemical factories can be used for obtaining nithril-acryl acid with subsequent production of nitron fiber and artificial resin for the rubber and automobile industries. Sulphurated hydrogen and sulphur compounds contained in gas and gas condensate are also being extracted and converted into sulphur at the Mubarek and Shurtan plants. (The stratal water of oil and gas deposits here contain a high alkaline content).
There are currently some 90 plus large gas pipes in the country, the combined length of which total more than 4,000 km. . Implementation of large-scale investments in the fuel and energy industries in 1995 achieved self-sufficiency in oil products, while allowing an oil extraction increase of some 3.7 times, and natural gas of 1.2, compared to 1991.
