Three Oaks Shelter

The Church of the Ascension was instrumental in building this homeless shelter for men.  The Three Oaks' new program for Food Service Classes are proceeding very well.  The class enables the participants to cook meals for themselves.  Their goal is to cook three meals a day under supervised training.  As they are preparing the food themselves they need only items like ham, chicken, hamburger, turkey etc.  Prepared foods, salads and desserts are no longer required. Our aim is to have enough meat for 20 people.  We assist with food the second and fourth Mondays of each month. There is a sign up sheet in the family room or you can contact Margaret Jarboe via the church office at 301-863-8551 for more information.

The shelter is located at 46905 Lei Drive, Lexington Park, near the library.  If you would like to participate in this ministry, please call Margaret Jarboe via the church office at 301-863-8551, or simply sign the chart in the Family Room.

Literacy Council Seeks Volunteers

Would you like to help an adult learn to read so that he or she can improve their standard of living?  If so, the Literacy Council of St. Mary's County would like to talk to you about our program.  We will train you to tutor the adults who come to us request help.  Fifteen percent (15%) of the adult population in St. Mary's County either cannot read at all or have serious reading problems.  Perhaps you can help.  If interested, call the Literacy Council Office in Leonardtown at (301) 475-9865 or e-mail for more details and the training course schedule. Thank you for your help!

Lexington Park Elementary School Volunteers

Tutors are needed!  Are you willing to spend one hour of your time each week helping a child learn to read?  Lexington Park Elementary School desperately needs volunteers who are willing to help a child learn to read or improve their math, science, or social science skills.  You would be assigned to work with one child one hour per week during the school day to help him/her improve his/her reading or other academic skills.  This is an opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of a child!  Say "YES!" and give with your heart and of your time and you will be richly blessed!  E-mail Karla DeSelms, call her via the church office at 301-863-8551 or call Juanita Mattox, the volunteer tutor coordinator, at Lexington Park Elementary at 301-863-4085.  The school currently occupies the Great Mills Annex while their site is being renovated.

"Suitcases for Kids"

Most foster care children carry their belongings in a black garbage bag as they move from home to home. Each child averages 7 moves while in foster care.  This Valentine's Day, the National Association of Former Foster Care Children of America, Inc in collaboration with the nation service project "Suitcases for Kids" is collecting suitcases and large duffel bags for distribution to children in foster care in the DC area.

Hard or soft luggage is okay.  Large backpacks are acceptable if you do not have any suitcases to donate.  Please help a child who is less fortunate than you. Please contact:
