Welcome to the Dante and Virgil website, a study of the literary, personal, and theological relationship between Dante Alighieri and the ancient Roman poet Virgil, especially in Dante's Divine Comedy.  As we'll see, Virgil was a profound influence on Dante in many ways, and this site attempts to explore them all.

Your first time here?  Here's a suggested course of action:  first, get a little background on both characters by reading the first two sections.  Then, see how Virgil fits into the Divine Comedy by reading the next three sections on Dante's choice of Virgil as a link to Homer, and a comparison of literary techniques Last, see what Virgil symbolized for Dante in the conlcuding section.

And if you're still hungry for more, check out the art gallery for a sampling of the many works of art inspired by the Divine Comedy, especially depictions of Dante and Virgil together.
