Reservoir Road Traffic Initiative
A study is underway of existing traffic conditions on Reservoir Road and possible changes in traffic and parking regulations
to improve traffic flow and safety. The study is a cooperative effort by MedStar Health, Georgetown University, ANC 2E,
the D.C. Department of Public Works, and local citizens associations, with funding coming from MedStar.
The initiative was started in 2000 in conjunction with two events: the
purchase by MedStar of the Georgetown University Medical Center, and
consideration by the Board of Zoning Adjustment of the Georgetown
University campus plan for the period 2000-2010. One legal condition on
campus operations is that they not be objectionable to surrounding
neighborhoods because of traffic. Future plans (part of the campus plan)
for the Medical Center call for expansion of operations, including a new
doctors' office building and a ramp garage, and for approval of these and
other developments it must be reasonably shown that they have minimal
traffic impact. In addition to this concern, MedStar has expressed the
desire as part of its business plan to provide the best possible access to
the Medical Center for patients and staff. The community has complained in
particular about gridlock conditions at the Medical Center and about heavy
traffic at Foxhall Road and east of 35th St.
The traffic initiative is intended to identify short-term regulatory
solutions to these problems as well as to lay the groundwork for better
traffic planning and impact assessment in the future. The following steps
have been taken or are being contemplated:
- Ken Laden of DPW has identified several changes in traffic regulations, parking regulations, and signage.
- A traffic consultant (O.R. George & Associates) was selected in a competitive bid process (in which neighborhood representatives participated).
