I've heard about some proposed laws that will make junk email illegal. What's RCN's take on these proposed laws?

The only thing that will make a serious dent in the amount of junk email flowing across the Net is to make it illegal. There are several bills pending before Congress which attempt to address the junk email problem. At the time of this writing, bills have been proposed by Sen. Murkowski (Alaska), Rep. Tauzin (Louisiana), Sen. Torricelli (New Jersey), Sen. Cook (Utah), and Rep. Smith (New Jersey). Of these proposed bills, four of them will actually make the situation worse if passed. The only one that will actually reduce the spam load (if passed as it's currently drafted) is the Smith Bill, aka "The Netizen's Protection Act," aka HR 1748. If you're skeptical, you need only know that spammers, the Commercial Internet Exchange, and the Direct Marketing Association are all very opposed to the Smith bill, and they all support the other four.
